Ethanol
Ethanol is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid with a characteristic wine-like odor and pungent taste. It is a psychoactive recreational drug, and the active ingredient in alcoholic drinks. It is made by fermenting the sugar or starch in plants such as corn, wheat, barley, sugar cane, and potatoes. Ethanol can be blended with gasoline to form a mixture called gasohol.
APPLICATION & USAGE
- Ethanol is an important industrial chemical; it is used as a solvent, in the synthesis of other organic chemicals, and as an additive to automotive gasoline (forming a mixture known as gasohol).
- Ethanol is also the intoxicating ingredient of many alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, and distilled spirits.
- It is also used in the cosmetics and beauty products industry, in paints as preservatives because it is an effective solvent and also used in cleansing products for preventing breach of organisms.
