Membranes are biological barriers that separate cells from their environment and regulate the transport of molecules and ions. Membranes are mainly composed of lipids and proteins. It can be made from a variety of materials and used in a variety of applications such as filtration, separation, and purification. They work by allowing certain molecules or particles to pass and blocking others.
APPLICATION & USAGE
- Protects cells from toxic substances.
- they contain receptors and channels that allow specific molecules to pass between the cell and the outside or between organelles; and
- They separate important but irreconcilable metabolic processes within the organelle. Membranes also allow cells to perform endocytosis and exocytosis.
